We are going South

Believing in change

Archive for November, 2008

In the recent announcement of the possible hostile takeover of Delta Airlines, by US Air, the question is asked what happens to the frequent fliers and their perks. For US Air customers they gain substantially, since Delta currently has double the number of flights per day compared to US AIr. The one issue that I see is that US Air has built a bad reputation on customer service especially in dealing with luggage. It is not uncommon to wait at least 30-45 minutes for your luggage. I have dealt with this personally when flying in and out of Philadelphia. I just hope that if there is a merger, my Delta miles and Flying status does not disappear.

  • Where did the buttons go?

In a new technology being deployed in newer elevators there are no more buttons. SO who do you get to the 21st floor you make ask. You enter that on a keypad in the lobby, and then when the correct elevator arrives, you hoping and it will take more of a direct route to the floor you have requested. This leaves alot of us confused because when you first enter one, thinking that you will just select destination, there are no buttons to select, and you are now at the mercy of the elevator. Called destination elevators, meant to speed up travel in the elevators, may leave alot of us taking to the stairs. This type of technology, while it may have it’s advantages, will require a total shift in our paradigm on how we use a common mode of transportation.

  • Real Estate

We just spent the weekend in Seattle and wow what eyepopping real estate prices. We took our kids to the Pacific Science Center which had a great Dinosaur exhibit. We thought, what a great place to live but after looking at the Real Estate prices and after picking outselves off the floor we have thought otherwise. The average price now in King County is $450,000. Let me tell you, there is some real junk that sells for that with all kinds of mold on the roof, poor wood etc. I guess that is the price when you need a city will the places for kids…

  • My Fitness Pal

Just found a web site that will help all we our eating habits, dieting and overall nutrition for our familes.  This is a free web site that will never ask for your credit card and has all kinds of resources you need to maintain a great body. The best thing I saw was the free calorie counter”>free calorie counter! This handy tool allows you to enter the type of exercise your performed from their extensive list of common and some rare exercises. I clicked on “W” and found water polo, white water rafting along with walking. But they go further and include, walking up hill downhill, two miles, three miles etc.

Another resource they have allows you find the content of common foods. I put in french fries and a list of 10 different types appeared to choose from. It included McDonalds, Frozen fries, shake and bake etc. Then in the window next to it you find the “calories in my food” itemized list, including total calories, fat and total carbs. If you join, which is all of your email and password which is never sold or rented, then you can keep track of your exercies meals etc. There are Google ads, but they are put in a nice to read and not where you can accidentally click on them.

Overall, this is a very professional web site which will help us make better food choices and lose weight the healthy way.

  • My Savings

Hey guys I just found a great site. All of us love free samples be it from the grocery store etc.
    Free Samples and Savings
What I found: printable coupons for wal mart, home depot Dell and Marriot. I also found a community site where other great interet surfers have found great products like Niva, Wrigley Gum and dove products. My family likes to keep in our happy little habits at the grocery store without reaching out too much, like shopping out the box. I can try out the some of these name brand products either free or at a serious discount.

Under free samples, you can click on mulitple categories like baby, automotive, health, cooking, clothing and home and garden. Give it try. I was very fun and what I like are the user comments so I know if I should be wasting my time with a particular product.

  • ePocrates tools for healthcare

In the world of healthcare, patients are much more educated and have access to a wealth of data. Sometimes this can be good, but sometimes can be a frustration for Dr.’s. As patients come in already self diagnosed, or they read on some website about the medication the Dr. put them on might cause hair loss the Dr.’s need to be prepared. With some of the great technology available Dr.’s can have access to this information much easier than looking it up in a textbook.Dr.’s can synchronize online daily to have the most current information.

With ePocrates handheld and web solutions, Dr.’s can have access to over 3300 drug descriptions, adverse event profiles and manage care formularies. It can help them readily print out patient education on dosing, healthcare plan coverage and more. They can tell a patient that is on Metoprolol for their hypertension, where it is covered, and provide a description of the drug. Since most patients are use to taking the little red pill for their heart, and something different for their thyroid it can be confusing what pill is for what condition. With one-third of U.S. adults taking at least five medications or supplements every day , patients often struggle when asked to list their medications. Epocrates helps physicians to be able to go online or access their Palm Pilot and show the patient a picture of the pills they may be taking.
